Dr Boyce Watkins speaks up on the Soulja Boy/Ice T Beef

Dr. Boyce Watkins, who is going to appear on a BET special next month, felt the need to speak up on the feud between Ice-T and Soulja Boy. In his article, Watkins states that Ice T needs to make room for young artists. He also said that while he loves Ice T's music and respects his career, he should spend more time working with Soulja Boy and helping him develop than hating on him.

Watkins appeared on CNN and The Wendy Williams Experience to discuss the beef between Oprah Winfrey, 50 Cent and Ice Cube last year.

C'mon. Any true hip-hop fan know that the artist today aren't as talented as the artists of the Golden Years of hip hop. Time's are different and hip hop then was a voice, a message, an answer to the issues that was hurting out neighborhood and communities. The artist today are too "hollywood" and the lack the skillz to stay consistent. Mad love to Big L, Biggie, Pac, Leaders of the New School, Tribe Called Quest, Dela Soul, NWA, Snoop, Outkast, Lost Boyz, just to name a few. Paper thin artist are creative but they haven't paid there dues.

I wish people would get off this golden years bullshit. Dr B is right that we need to respect young artists and stop thinking that all the musical talent died in 1998. The music today is just as good as it was back in the day. I say this as an old school hip hop fan.

Respect these young niggaz and stop hatin so damn much.

How do people expect us to get off the "golden years" of hip-hop when they were so freaking good? Slick Rick, Geto Boys, Eric B & Rakim, Public Enemy, EPMD, Big Daddy Kane, etc.

I dunno, that's kinda like asking people to forget about the Beatles and pave way for Jimmy Eat World.

This new shit sucks. I understand that slumps in a musical genre are just as necessary as a good boost. It does, afterall, make those good boosts more meaningful when you finally get to live through one. I don't think it's gonna happen for a while in rap though.

It'll be a big before we get another Nas, GZA, or Rakim. For now, we gotta just turn that radio off and rely on some of our own music collection.

You want some real hip hop TODAY, listen to IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE, Joel Ortiz, Mos-Def, Talib Kweli, you want some club bangers, listen to wha's on the radio... What you have on the radio is like magazine stands, it's here for today but a new issue/song will be out next month... when you want somethin wit depth, you have to go searchin like in a library and actually pay attention to what it's sayin.

Shut down the record companies and you will put an end to all this fake plastic crap thats goin on..

Hip Hop belongs to the people and no way should anyone here on this blog rely on old record collections to hold them over..

we live in the underground most definitely..but... like dude said above me you gotta dig for it like a library..

By the way, None of this music is Hip Hop. This is rap cause when u rap to someone ou aint really sayin nothing you tryin to socialize..

Whether you agree or disagree, Hip-Hop is going through similar changes Rock had gone through every generation. We need to understand that Rock has developed many genres and sub genres (i.e. Punk, Soft Rock, Grunge, Emo, etc.).

Hip-Hop has only begun to begin the creation of its own sub-genres (i.e. gangsta, backpack). I agree that the change has to come from the grassroots level. If we don't create these genres and keep getting these sub-genres, then we run the risk of imploding. I respect music...some more than others. The Golden Years were called that because of the diversity of Hip-Hop during that period of time. We gotta understand that since then, Hip-Hop has globalized and reached the corners of the Earth. Hip-Hop has become a popular lifestyle. We still have Hip-Hop artists today similar to Hip-Hop artists during the Golden Years, you just have to look close.

I believe you can learn from everything & anything, everyone & anyone. What I don't believe in is calling yourself an artist and not studying the artists, the art form and the history that came before you. As an artist, you owe it to those who came before you to learn their art. Go as far back as you can, trace Hip-Hop back before Kool Herc, before Hip-Hop.

Whether you agree or not,

peace, love, respect...

Lets see..Records like Planet Rock and records from other atrists like SugarHill Gang and more. Were they a part of Hip-Hop? Maybe just Club Bangers or Party Records. Lol Let these young trendsetters get their paper$$$ Ice T or Souljah Boy? Can Ice define Hip-Hop? Just running my opinion on the Ice T and Souljah Boy.

Anonymous said...

Planet Rock was for the B-Boys not for "clubs" because the clubs back then were discos.. You will not find B-Boys in clubs nowadays because it is "played out" to them although it is one of the 4 elements of Hip Hop as stated by the Zulu Nation of Afrika Bambaataa.

As far as getting paper, yeah let them get paper and keep selling their souls... He's trying to do for him which is marvelous but when u have an audience who is bunch of groupies saying to superman that hoe just remember souljah boy is paid and it evens everything out..

first off Ice T should leave souljah boy alone, hes just adding fuel to the fire. i cant stand souljah boy or any of that lollipop music at all. but he is getting bread from it and the little kids love it. what bothers me is that someone like Kanye can say that souljah boys lyrics are on Nas's level which just bogles my mind. souljah boy (and all that other bubble gum crap) i feel is ruining hip hop. and he wasnt the first, you forget about D4L? hiphop has become extremely commercialized and the labels are encouraging that so they can make money. the love of money is what is ruining the game, and thats how we ended up with D4L and Souljah Boy. there is no way to stop it. but when i see grown men in the club doing a souljah boy dance, its sickening... but i cant hate on lil man hes doing his thing.

Soulja Boy is NOT Nas!

Muhammad is spitting that knowledge on yo ass...Yes Sirrrr! Hey brothers just look at the Evolution of it in general. Just a thought. Let us not "Willie Lynch" each other over the Music and the ability of brothers making $$money with their talent. Everybody on this planet has to make Money or get it somehow. Young Dude could have a Glock and robbing yo ass instead of making Beats..One Love!

ok really so was humpy hump, kid nplay, and ed lover dr dre, a curtis blow really justthe true essence of hip hop. i almost for got i get around by the great tupac. all u ol ass yesteryear hip hop fans forget dancing is a major part of hip hop hmmmm.... krush groove, and that graffti movie i was taught bboyin graffti mc was hip hop. its 2008 let me translate soulja boy= dance+lupe=emcee+fashion=graffti= HIP HOP........... so stop wit the hatin this shun from the A the south got sumthin 2 say.

Anonymous said...

Not only do I agree with what Dr. Boyce said, I also agree with the dude above me. People have to remember that rappers have been making us dance for a while. Stop hating the change and respect the new game.

Anonymous said...

Thats weak. The "Yesteryear Listener" doesnt wanna hear your version of "Rap" as sounding like christine aquilera or britney spears..

If down south rappers have something to say.. what are they saying? superman that hoe? ok.. yeah giz on your girl.. what is that telling me? nothing.. its useless data..

take Young Jeezy.. what is he saying? he's rich now.. so what else is new? of course you're gonna be rich if u sound like somebody else..

T.I. what is he saying? I am the King of the South.. and so when he eventually fades out of the public eye.. he's the king of the south right? ridiculous.. it's not saying anything..

D4L.. Laffy Taffy.. yeah they snapped they ass back into their strip clubs.. who cares..

Souljah Boy.. come on be real.. you call that hating? thats like watching your grandfather rap and shaking your head.. but hey grandpa is paid.. Souljah boy aint got no skill.. get off the mic .. he dont belong there..

Music is a form of art regardless of how you look at it.. Where is the art in saying youre gonna superman a hoe.. and ladies if you down for that re evaluate how he looks at yall to say that..

Ice-T has been so successful in the Hip Hop realm that he moved on to the film genre and tv show genre... if Ice-T says what he says it's because he has the clout too through his success in this realm.. souljah boy should shut his mouth, he's only 1 album deep.. and that's not enough to talk..

everybody relax. soulja Boy is hip hop just so is digital underground humpty dance, tone loc wild thing and countless other novelty records. hip hop branched out. i aint mad at that dude, at least he hasn't (YET) started with the hip hop porn/petrone sippin/wheel spinnin that is 90% of videos. besides, what is soulja boy, like 19 years old? if he was 30 still makin supaman part 7, everybody would have a gripe. give him a chance to grow a lil mentally/spiritually. he aint been thru enuff to expect more. its a cute record for kids, and he's got somethin goin, and it aint the worst for the kids i've seen, show him how to use his influence to touch the community, and let it ride.

Anonymous said...

thats crazy to even say that the superman track is for the kids...Kids dont need to grow up that fast and hear some 19 yr old tell them to cum on a woman and be as disrespectful as they can to a woman.. because thats what the song is about..

You can compare that to digital underground and even Tone Loc but none of they joints is disrespectful like that..

Again, where's the accountability for the actions..

again Bo Jangles was rich but for doing what.. his minstrel acts.. you can say oh its harmless and this that and the 3rd.. but when u hear a 5 year old singing it.. and it would be your son or daughter how harmless is it now?

Hip Hop was always meant to be the music of the oppressed and voiceless since its first conception.. from the upmost beginning when Kool Herc couldnt rock in the rec room and used to hook systems up to street lamps..

by the way it wasnt for Kool Herc there would be no Hip Hop so all fall in and show respect..

i was the anonymous one that left the comments about it bieng for the kids... went and reviewed the lyrics to the explicit version, can't back what that dude is sayin. honestly i couldn't understand 90% of what he said in that record, i have a different opinion after reviewing the lyrics. and i thought it was "supaman that ohhh" goes to show if you ain't careful, you don't know what you or your kids might be singin along to. he even said in the joint he would shoot if he got in a fight. don't know how that fits in a club record, but another sign of the times lil cowards that shoot cause they can't fight (too much time on the xbox)... anyhow, its entertainment for him and his fans, just like a movie, or anything else, he's out to turn a buck, we gotta keep it at that, cause you know we can't rely on every hip hop artist to send us a message. its just good to dialogue and point out bs when we see it.

Anonymous said...

change will occur when we let our dollars speak. we gotta support what we consider to be real hip hop and what speaks to us, and show the kids the same thing. when we buy/download and support the stuff we claim is ruining hip hop, it supports the cycle. let's support the commons www.myspace.com/common, talib www.myspace.com/talibkweli, that new xola kid www.myspace.com/xolamusic then we'll see change.

I think its ABSOLUTLEY ridiculous that Ice T, a GROWN ASS MAN is beefing with a little boy...what is Soulja Boy like 17 or something? I'm trying to really understand his motive. What? Would you expect him to rap about selling drugs or shooting up a convience store or something? He's a kid doing kiddie stuff. Ice T diplayed his immaturity to the tenth power by going their with a child not to mention that there are PLENTY of older rappers rapping complete CRAP that he could have got at, but you go for Soulja Boy?...lol, come one now what type of "battle" is that? He could have been constructive and pulled him to the side, mentor him or something. I just think that the way that ADULTS handle situations. Here is the thing....You are always going to have fun music, you know party type, get you on the dance floor music and you are going to have serious make you think about what's going on in the world music. Even Tupac was down with Ditial Underground Singing "Do the Humpty Hump" so It would be really great for people to get OFF of their high horse and sit it on down somewhere. You know what I do when I don't like a song? I don't LISTEN TO IT. I don't BUY IT....it really is that simple. Maybe if it doesn't sell people won't buy it...and if there ARE people buying it...its because SOMEBODY out their likes it and they have a right to like whatever they want. Even with videos...I couldn't tell you the lastest video out right now...cuz I DO feel like they aren't like the use to be, but you could watch a video all day and LOVE it...won't bother me none. You can buy every Soulja Boy album that he ever makes, I won't, but it won't bother me one bit. Its called Freedom of Choice. Choose not to buy the shit and move on. See the simplicity in it all?

Ok lets just be real about something. Soulja Boy has no respect for hip hop. He takes it as a joke. I mean he had all the little kids saying
"SUPERMAN THAT HOE" while dancing at the same time. I mean have any of you looked up the meaning of that "catchy" phrase? Not something you'd want to repeat, and then he makes a song about screaming at his fans? "YAAAHHH TRICK YAHHH" ? I MEAN seriously come one. Then lets not forget his song about getting a F on his report card and telling his teacher to throw some D's on it? There is no message to his music but stupidity. He's a clown. He's just entertainment. But not a amusing for me. When he grows up he's just goin to be another flavor flav. iCE T has already left his foot print maybe soulja boy can learn from some real hip hop.

Anonymous said...

They don't want to keep the trend going, but the last person to be hatin on soulja boy should be Ice T, since he is guilty of everything that he accuses soulja boy of doing - he made music back in the day that hip hop heads hated, and he also degraded women, so what the fuck gives on that?

Anonymous said...

I can understand where Ice T is coming from. Soulja Hoe is fucking up rap. I mean, sure the kid shouldn't be rapping about drugs, etc. BUT, he could at LEAST rap about something. In ALL of his lyrics, I see no consistency... the songs make ABSOLUTELY NO sense whatsoever. All they have is a tight beat and a catchy chorus, THAT'S IT. He needs to re-up, learn how to make good lyrics.

He could take a lesson from youngsters like, The Cool Kids. They are good, they beat Soulja Boy's lame bubblegum crap ANY DAY.
