Kanye West Responds To Critics: Album Is 'Great Art'

LOS ANGELES – Kanye West says he's not concerned about whether his new album is a blockbuster, because he's made "great art" — and he feels really good about it.

West's new CD, "808s & Heartbreak," was released Monday. It's a departure for the 31-year-old rapper because it mostly features him singing.

West says he was ready to take a risk and he thinks it paid off.

Says West: "You know people sometimes don't understand great art when they first hear it, but I am very confident in it. Whether it sells as much as the last one, or way more, I feel like I am just successful in doing something I felt really good about."

C-Murder 2nd Trial Date Set

According to the Associated Press, a second trial has been set for January 12, 2009. However, the first judge Sassone will not preside over the trial, after losing re-election as 24th Judicial District Court in Louisiana. Her successor, Ellen Kovach, has also made it clear that she as well will not be a part of the murder trial due to her open criticism of Sassone during her campaign for election, where she specifically criticized the decisions of the Miller trial.

C-Murder, was charged for second-degree murder and convicted in 2003 after fatally shooting 16-year-old Steve Thomas at a Louisiana night club on January 12, 2002. The conviction was eventually overturned by State Judge Martha Sassone. Sassone then granted Miller a second trial, though at the time there was no decision on when that trial would occur.

Your Black Hip Hop: Interview with Angela Arnold aka ASA

This 25 year old Louisville, Kentucky native has been singing since age 4 and is excited about the upcoming release of her first album, Asa: Loves Experience, A Steve Wallis Project.

Where do you currently live?

I’m in East Orange, but I claim Louisville. I’m a native of Louisville, Kentucky. I love New Jersey but my sound-- a lot of people you will see talking about me will tell you that it’s a Louisville sound.

Did you go to school, what was your major?

My major was Theatre Arts with a concentration in music. Rather than just having a God given talent, I have studied music. I’m definitely an actor as well.

College was much harder for me at one point. But I made it through!

Who influences you?

Anywhere from Billie Holiday to Tina Marie, Dinah Washington…

I could name a lot of folks, and that will definitely reflect on my album. The greatest of the influences that I’ve had when it comes to my music has been those greats of the 1930s.

If I took your iPod, what music would I find?

Tina Marie, she is one of the ultimate artists to me; Stevie Wonder, a lot of older cats. (Laughs). One of the newer cats: John Legend.

Ne-Yo, I think he’s a genius. Billie Holiday. And Jill Scott of course, Jill is all over the place in my iPod.

I tell you what; if I ever got the chance to work with Prince I’d be done. He’s probably one of the only artists I admire no matter what he does.

Does your album have a release date? What was some of your motivation for the album?

It doesn’t have a release date at this time, either at the end of December or early January. Steve Wallis is the producer of this project; we wanted it to be very exclusive. He really brought out what I wanted to do with the album.

I wrote all of the lyrics on the album except for two, and two of those were collaborations with Steve. I’m very proud of this album.

In February I lost a really good friend of mine and a good friend of a lot of people in the industry, Static Major. I started thinking to myself, “What is my purpose here? What did I come to the east coast to do and why am I not doing it? “ I feel there was some kind of force leading me there, whether it has been the spirit of my father or static’s spirit or even reminiscing on my father.

What do you do for fun?

A lot of times I just hang out with my friends, we might go see a theatre show, I might take in a film or support fellow artists.  I make jewelry. That might be the next thing on the list to bring to the forefront.

Any advice for aspiring artists?

Have a plan. Educate yourself about the industry and don’t give up. It’s a lot of work but in the end, as long as you’re true to the art and as long as you stay true to the message that you’re trying to send to others, you will succeed.

Trail For T.I.s Assistant and Friend Has Started

One of the men accused of killing T.I.’s assistant and friend, Philant Johnson, went on trial for the murder in Cincinnati:

"Prosecutors told a jury that they are sure Hosea Thomas fired the fatal shot because of their star witness – Padron Thomas, the accused killer’s brother who was driving the Jeep that night as it chased T.I.’s vans down Seymour Avenue.

“It’s all going to come down to witness testimony,” assistant Hamilton County prosecutor Heather Gosselin told jurors today.

Hosea Thomas, 34, is charged with murder, felonious assault and other charges stemming from the incident. Three members of T.I.’s entourage were injured and a fourth, Philant Johnson, died after being shot in the head during the running gunbattle. Johnson was T.I.’s assistant and childhood friend.

Hosea Thomas, Gosselin said, was hit in the head with a bottle while inside Roselawn’s Club Ritz, where T.I. and his crew were attending an afterparty following a concert at Bogart’s.
That started a fight that resulted in patrons pouring out of the club. Within minutes, T.I.’s two vans were chased by a green Jeep Cherokee and the shooting took place.

Padron Thomas, 40, told officials he was driving the Jeep as his brother, Hosea, fired the shots at T.I.’s vans. At least one member of T.I.’s crew returned fire.

Cincinnati police officer Dom Meece testified today that the scene inside T.I.’s van was “something out of a horror movie” with blood dripping off of the ceiling and brain matter on the floor.

After the shooting, Gosselin said, Padron Thomas had his Jeep painted black and had a bullet hole in it repaired. (Source) "

I am asking all of Dirty's fans to boycott this book as none of the proceeds are going to the children and this author’s motives and intentions seems to be in the vein of disgracing my son’s legacy,” Jones stated. “Quotes from Robert Shapiro in [Wednesday's] newspaper are shameful that an attorney who represented my son for less then a minute and has been out of the spotlight would comment and speculate on my son’s health in order for a mention of his name in print.
